Chapter One: Introduction
Social media is a broad term used to describe a variety of communication technologies and digital media platforms. This includes websites and applications that allow users to interact with each other over the internet. Through social media, people are able to share information, photos, and videos, as well as engage in discussion. Mental health issues are becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society and exploring the effects social media has on mental health is an important topic of study.
The mental health costs and benefits of social media are multifaceted and varied. This paper will explore the history of social media and its positive and negative impacts on mental health. Additionally, this paper will examine how mental health professionals are responding to the potential consequences that social media can have on mental health. The goal of this research is to provide insight into the relationship between social media use and mental health as well as share recommendations on how to further study this area.
